The National Bioethics Committee

The National Bioethics Committee shall operate in a transparent and accountable manner at the national level as an independent formal body, to provide expertise, guidance and oversight on ethical matters related to medicine, biomedical research, and public health. The roles, functions, and responsibilities to inform discussion on establishing and operating an effective model within the UAE. Furthermore, the NBC will advise policymakers and the government on bioethical matters of importance to the nation and ensure compliance for adopting the best ethical practices for clinical and biomedical research in the UAE.

In broad terms, the activities of National Bioethics Committees can be classified into one or more of the following three categories:

  1. Protocol Review:The National Bioethics Committee reviews the frameworks and policies related to research protocols and projects in the UAE.
  2. Policy Development:The NBC develops policies and guidelines that provide an ethical framework for research projects carried out in the UAE.
  3. Bioethical Focus:The NBC does not solely concentrate on research or specific research projects but works on bioethical issues more broadly.

Overall, establishing an NBC can provide many benefits for the UAE engaged in biomedical research. This includes strengthening the bioethical infrastructure and capacity to deliver well-informed, socially acceptable, and contextually relevant public policies that reflect the needs and concerns of its society in the UAE.
